Why do I coach CrossFit? A very wise man and friend of mine once told me, “No matter how wealthy a man becomes, without his health his wealth means nothing.” This country puts such a premium on moving up the economic ladder and that sacrifices must be made to do so, and one of the first things to go is making time to stay healthy.

We eat less of what is good for us, more of what is bad. We sit more and move less. We sleep less, and stress harder. Only to find that 10 years down the road we are 20 years older. I coach CrossFit to teach people that they don’t have to compromise their health, and in fact can improve it. I coach CrossFit because I enjoy seeing the look in a mom’s eyes when she accomplishes something she thought she could never do, and even more so, the look in her son’s eye when he sees her do it and for the first time realizes his mom still the coolest girl he knows. I coach CrossFit because it allows me to help others realize they are still athletes. That just because high school, college, or even a professional career is over, they can still compete, with others and with themselves. The empowerment someone feels when they go from never being able to perform a pull up in their life to cranking out sets of 25 cannot be matched by an annual bonus, or recognition at a company retreat. And I am lucky enough to be the one there to see the smile on their face as they drop from the bar in exhausted ecstasy. I’m not Tony Robbins, but I get to see people change their lives every day. Little by little, or in leaps and bounds, each CrossFitter is reinvesting in themselves, in their health, reclaiming something they thought reserved for their youth, achieving that which they thought impossible, gaining respect in the eyes of their children, and more importantly in their own eyes. Why do I coach CrossFit? Because it allows me to feel like what I do matters.

In 2008, I discovered CrossFit and it changed my world. I never considered myself much of an athlete, however, after I began to seriously commit to the CrossFit method of training, I quickly realized that anyone, regardless of age or athletic background, can succeed at CrossFit and become an athlete, no matter where they start on day 1.

I am amazed at the huge impact CrossFit has on peoples’ lives and how it inspires them to break boundaries and reach goals unlike anything else can. Additionally, I am excited to be able to unite my two passions, CrossFit and yoga, and to be able to help athletes in our community become stronger, healthier, and happier.

I remember watching my old high school team play a football game on ESPN when I turned to my friend and said, “I wish I could get back into my football playing shape again.” At that point in time I was living the typical college life and eating the typical college food but that day, I was determined to not become another statistic.

I joined a local gym and started doing the usual gym routine. I spent two and a half hours every day doing the same stuff over and over again and it got boring fast. I knew there had to be something more out there. That’s when a friend challenged me to try CrossFit. I was nervous the first time I stepped in a box but after I tried my first workout, I was hooked. I love CrossFit because it exposes areas of your fitness that you are weak and forces you to improve them. Every day I learn something new and find something else I can improve. My current focus and specialty is coaching Olympic Weightlifting and assisting with our Barbell Club.

A little over 5 years ago, I weighed 250 lbs. I was taking medications for high blood pressure and cholesterol while taking over the counter pain killers to combat the ever-nagging pain in my back, shoulders and knees. Coming from a family history plagued with diabetes and heart disease, I had had enough. I started working out with a personal trainer for a couple of years, lost 75 lbs.,

was able to abandon the medications, and was feeling great. However, as is the case for many people, settling into a workout routine became monotonous over time and eventually became boring. I started to lose the desire to work out and also developed some issues with my rotator cuffs in my shoulders. During that time, I happened to watch the 2013 Reebok CrossFit Games on TV. Those athletes were phenomenal! More so, I saw the attraction in the style of workouts, the competitive spirit driving each of them and in the comradery between those who were finishing first and those who were struggling to finish at all. Watching athletes at that level cheer, push, drive and inspire each other was exactly what I wanted to be a part of. I was a bit nervous in starting CrossFit because I had heard of how intense it was and how many people were claiming injury as a detriment. It didn’t take long for me to dispel those negative comments. The coaches at CrossFit Midland were very aware of my existing injuries and helped me with my mobility, strength and worked around my limitations; always stressing technique over ability. After successfully having surgeries performed to repair my pre‐existing problems in my shoulders, I have become stronger than I have ever been before.

From being an athlete all through high school and playing intramural sports through college, to become obese and sedentary, to finding a renewed energy and passion for fitness, my story is one I hope to share with others and help them in their journey to a healthier, fit lifestyle. Of late, I have received invaluable advice from our CrossFit Midland nutritionists and experienced even more results in strength while reducing my overall BMI and body fat percentage. I’ve been able to pass along this passion and dedication to my kids and both of my boys are experiencing better performance in their athletic programs and both have been able to frame their diets around sound nutrition advice given to me. CrossFit has had such a broad and impacting effect on just about every facet of my life. I love being surrounded at the box by people who inspire me, push me, teach me and make me feel a part of something bigger than myself.
