We eat less of what is good for us, more of what is bad. We sit more and move less. We sleep less, and stress harder. Only to find that 10 years down the road we are 20 years older. I coach CrossFit to teach people that they don’t have to compromise their health, and in fact can improve it. I coach CrossFit because I enjoy seeing the look in a mom’s eyes when she accomplishes something she thought she could never do, and even more so, the look in her son’s eye when he sees her do it and for the first time realizes his mom still the coolest girl he knows. I coach CrossFit because it allows me to help others realize they are still athletes. That just because high school, college, or even a professional career is over, they can still compete, with others and with themselves. The empowerment someone feels when they go from never being able to perform a pull up in their life to cranking out sets of 25 cannot be matched by an annual bonus, or recognition at a company retreat. And I am lucky enough to be the one there to see the smile on their face as they drop from the bar in exhausted ecstasy. I’m not Tony Robbins, but I get to see people change their lives every day. Little by little, or in leaps and bounds, each CrossFitter is reinvesting in themselves, in their health, reclaiming something they thought reserved for their youth, achieving that which they thought impossible, gaining respect in the eyes of their children, and more importantly in their own eyes. Why do I coach CrossFit? Because it allows me to feel like what I do matters.
